Please join us for our Autumn concert, “Rise in Glory”, which is on 11 October 2025 at 7:30pm at St George’s Church. We will be joined by the exceptionally talented young ‘cellist Susannah Wells.
Rise in Glory is a programme remembering Kings and Queens, composers and politicians, through the music written for them by many the finest composers from the 16th – 21st century in England, Spain, France and Germany. In the first half, each piece brings us into close contact not only with the composer, but also the subject of their music. The programme begins with three pieces written for royalty: Alonso Lobo’s beautiful motet for Phillip II of Spain and two works first performed in Westminster Abbey, Henry Purcell’s Ode for Queen Mary and Judith Weir’s piece heard at the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II only three years ago. With each of the following three pieces, we explore a relationship between contemporaries: Flemish composer Josquin laments the death of early master Ockeghem, William Byrd remembers his mentor Thomas Tallis, and Schutz dedicates his work to a lesser known but equally brilliant fellow Baroque master Johann Schein. The final work of the first half is Herbert Howells’ masterpiece Take Him Earth for Cherishing, written in 1964 to be performed to commemorate the 1st anniversary of the assasination of JF Kennedy. In the second half, Sine Nomine perform some of the finest choral classics by Taverner, Parry, Bach and Harris, united by their emphasis on commemoration and hope.
